Before Astrology Stole the Stars: an open Bible, a brass telescope and constellation drawings against the night sky

The big idea

Long before horoscopes, the night sky held a story.

Many Christians in the 1800s believed that story was the gospel. They read the twelve signs and their 36 companion constellations as one unfolding account: the promised Seed, the Redeemer who suffers, the people He redeems, and the King who returns.

These writers believed astrology later corrupted that meaning and turned the stars into fortune-telling. This course takes you back to their reading, through three classic Christian books, so you can look up and see God's glory instead of your horoscope.

It is a beautiful, historic way of reading the sky. We'll show you what Scripture says, what these writers believed, and where the two part ways.

Honest about what we know

Hold Scripture firmly.
Hold the old theories loosely.

Every lesson separates what the Bible says plainly from what Bullinger, Seiss and Rolleston taught. You'll always know which is which.

Hold firmly

  • God made the stars and calls them by name.
  • The heavens declare His glory.
  • The promise of a Redeemer, His suffering, His victory and His coming again.
  • Scripture forbids reading the stars to tell the future.

Hold loosely

  • The meanings these writers gave to ancient star names.
  • Their theory that the gospel was placed in the constellations from the beginning.
  • Their readings of each sign and its companion constellations.
  • Many of these ideas are disputed by scholars, and we say so.

The goal isn't to prove a theory. It's to see God's glory and His story when you look up.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is this astrology?

No. It's the opposite. Astrology reads the stars to tell your fortune, and Scripture forbids it:

"Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them."ISAIAH 47:13–14 (KJV)

This course never uses the stars to predict anything. It's about seeing God's glory and His story, not your future:

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."PSALM 19:1 (KJV)
Do the stars prove the gospel?

No, and we don't claim they do. Bullinger, Seiss and Rolleston believed the gospel was written in the constellations, and many scholars dispute their star-name meanings and theories. The course presents theirs as a beautiful, historic Christian reading of the sky, and it always separates what Scripture says plainly from what these writers taught.

Do I need to know astronomy or have Bible training?

No. The course starts from the beginning and explains everything in plain language, five minutes at a time.

Do I need a telescope?

No. The "Look Up Tonight" lessons and the Sky Finder on your phone show you how to find each constellation with your own eyes on a clear night.

Will I see every constellation tonight?

Not all at once. The constellations move through the year, so some are only in the evening sky in certain seasons. The Sky Finder tells you which ones are up tonight, and when the others will return.

Which Bible translation do you use?

The King James Version, throughout the course.

Can I use it with a group or with my children?

Yes. The short lessons, Star Cards, printable Workbook & Journal and "Look Up Tonight" lessons work well for Bible-study groups and homeschool families.

How long do I have access?

Unlimited. Once you enroll, the course is yours to come back to anytime: replay lessons, review the materials and practice as often as you like.

John D. Mayfield

About the author

Hi, I'm John Mayfield.

I've spent nearly five decades teaching, and I created the 5-Minutes Series to make learning anything feel simple: short lessons, clear steps and time to let it sink in.

This course grew out of my own wonder at the night sky and my love for God's Word. When I discovered Bullinger's The Witness of the Stars, I wanted to share it in a way anyone could follow, honest about what Scripture says and what it doesn't. My wife, Kerry, and I reviewed the course together.

My hope is simple: that the next time you look up, you'll see His glory.
